Alliance captainA student-led robotics team. In six to eight weeks, we design, code and build a 125 lb robot to compete in a brand-new game every year.
Take a minute to see who we are, what we build and why we do it.
Play our introduction
To build technical skill and essential soft skills in our students, preparing them for fulfilling careers that match their passions. We’re committed to gender equality and to an inclusive, supportive environment for everyone.
Founded in 2018 by two student leaders, the Mavericks have grown into a community of high school students and volunteer mentors, now based in the STEM Hub at BGC South East on Bath Road.
Everyone finds a place. Each subteam owns a piece of the season and works closely with the others.
Strategy is the game plan for the season. Together the team sets its goals, and those goals shape the robot’s design requirements, what the programmers build and how we play on the field. The strategy team works with every other subteam to share the latest rule changes and keep everyone pulling in the same direction.
With a focus on collaboration and fun, we plan how to score points efficiently, make the most of our alliance partners and get the best out of our robot.
The business team tells our story and keeps the lights on. They promote the team in the community, organize fundraisers and stay in close touch with our sponsors, sending each of them a monthly newsletter so they can follow the season.
They also run the team’s social media and this website, and gain real experience in communication, budgeting and managing resources.
From the first sketches to the final build, the hardware team makes our robots from scratch. Students learn to design, machine and assemble every part of the robot, and see it come together in just a few weeks.
We shape metal, wood and plastic using tools such as 3D printers and CNC machines, so every part is made to fit and built to last through a full competition.
The software team brings the robot to life with code. Using Java, they program it to understand its surroundings and move with precision.
Whether it’s the first 15 seconds of autonomous action, when the robot plays on its own, or smooth driving for the rest of the match, they’re the digital minds behind the machine.
The electrical team powers up our robots and builds the vital links between the machine’s brain and its body.
They install and configure everything from motors to sensors, making sure the robot has the energy and the intelligence to perform when it matters.
FIRST Robotics is a mentor-led program. Experienced professionals guide us in gaining real-world skills, working alongside us to solve the new challenge that comes with every game.
Through hands-on instruction and continuous problem-solving, they help us overcome obstacles and build critical thinking. We deeply appreciate the countless hours they volunteer and the experience they share.
